Assignment 16: Aperture Studies
Take two photos for this assignment of an object or person NOT in motion. Use the same object/person for both photos. One will be with a small aperture (F8? F11?), the other with a large aperture (F2). When you post the photos, label which is a large aperture and which is small.
You will need to have something close to the camera and something far away from the camera to effectively demonstrate the difference between the two photos.
If you want to read more there's an introduction to apertures here: http://digital-photography-school.com/aperture . Their example of two flowers (about halfway down the page) is the type of comparison you should be submitting for this assignment.
1. If your entire photo is blurred or shows camera shake, don't submit it like that - reshoot it.
2. If your entire picture is way too dark or too light, don't submit it - experiment with adjusting the shutter speed, the film speed, or the exposure settings to control the amount of light.
3. Always think about composition. Is there background clutter that is distracting? Do you have colors that work well together? Are there leading lines, is there a sense of rhythm, or are you using the rule of thirds?
Grading rubric: 6 points total
1 - Same subject for each photo
2 - Clear distinction between aperture settings
1 - proper labeling of which image was shot with the large aperture and which was with the small aperture
1 - focus
1 - composition (color, form, lines, attention to background)
