Assignment 12: Lighting projects

Post  Admin on Mon Mar 23, 2009 10:25 am

Research a specific lighting technique and demonstrate its use in a photograph. There are several photography books in the classroom you can use, or you can do some research online. Post your photo here, and be prepared to give a short presentation to the class including a diagram of how your lighting was set up, and proper vocabulary terms for lighting. Your grade will depend both on the quality of your photo and your ability to professional communicate your technique to others in the class.

Possible Resources:
http://www.alienbees.com/glossary.html
http://www.lowel.com/glossary.html

Grading rubric:
8 points total

Presentation

1 point: accurate diagram of lighting used in presentation

Photo
2 points: creativity of lighting setup (one light aimed at a person will be scored significantly lower than several lights placed to accomplish specific functions
3 points: overall creativity and technical skill (focus, composition, color/lighting balance)

Earl Dube-Lighting Project

Side Lighting is the contrast of the sides of a portrait or picture one side light shaded the other side dark shaded it’s like light shining on the subject from the side relative to the camera, and it often casts long shadows.

Bounce Lighting is an indirect light source where the actual light is pointed away from that which you wish to illuminate, and bounced off of a reflective surface back towards your subject.

Contrast is the degree of difference between the dark and the light areas of a scene or photograph.

I used "Ambient Light" in this shot, it was the light that was made by the lamp in my basement. Also i set the light at about a 10 degree angle to the object.

I got rid of any ambient lighting in the room, and positioned two lights to the left-
-one with a white cover pointed down on a white wall, which reflected back to the edge of the cup and the earrings, bringing it out of shade (this position is meant to be used as fill light, to keep part of the subject out of the complete shadow).
-The other light was with a soft vibrant yellow shading over it, and positioned it behind the backdrop, used as backlighting with the translucent yellow cover peeking out at the edge to add a soft "halo-like" effect to the photo, making it less harsh in color and more soft. this also complements the orange color of the cup and mahogany of the wood, which allows for the earring and handle to stand out against the shadow and the black backdrop.
-Also, with the yellow light positioned higher and behind the subject, it let a kind of dramatic shadow appear on the right side, as well as a noticeable reflection onto the wood.

Lighting Assignment

Post  KatieM_2 on Wed Apr 01, 2009 9:10 am

This lighting style is one that uses splitting light which divides the subject along the center by using a source of light coming from one side the illuminates that side of the subject. My subject was slightly turned so the areas that got the light would be different from a portrait style lighting.

The types of lighting I used were hightlight and hight spot which is basically a straight forward light at the object so that there is one part of the picture over lit and the other half to dark which makes another kind orf lightin called split lighting where the lights seperate the picture in half like a negative and positive

I didn't have a beauty dish so to make the effect of one i put an umbrella lamp behind the backdrop amost directly behind where she was sitting, then another above her head off to my left (when i was taking the photo) and your right if you were her.

and also;

Model; Jenna

-I will post more about the lighting in the photo if I'm told to do so
