1. Think about the psychology of how we look at print ads. Include the hierarchy of visual, caption, headline, copy, and signature.

2. Use a Full Bleed on your image.

3. Use tracking to avoid widows and orphans. If you are using wide tracking, remember we generally would use that for words written in ALL CAPS, not lowercase words.

Create a small repeating pattern. Seams should be, well, seamless. The edges of the repeat should wrap around and reconnect in a creative way. Please see samples at http://squidfingers.com/patterns/. To get an idea of complexity, I am including a sample of a former student’s work here:

Notice that this is more complex than a large X through the middle of each repeating square - and shapes interlock across the edges of each square. This is a design challenge. (I know you can fill in ...

Now that we’ve played around with how to make a pattern fill, the next assignment is to use it in a creative way in a graphics project. You can draw the image entirely in photoshop, use your own photos, or use a combination of the two.

Here’s a great example from http://www.anna-om-line.com/english.htm :

Grading: 5 points total

2 points: incorporation of pattern in a creative way that complements the picture

2 points: composition/color

1 point: technical skill

All of you should be fairly skilled with the pen tool now, as well as with taking photos. We tend to think of them as two separate styles of work. The challenge for this assignment is to merge the styles together. Starting with one of your own photos, use the pen tool to create shapes that are cut out from the photo and filled with patterns, textures, or another photo.

That gives you all at least a one-week grace period for turning in those assignments, and gives me the weekend to grade. Anything not submitted at the end of school hours on Friday will be averaged into your grade as a Zero for the progress reports. Zeros bring your average down a huge amount, a full letter grade or more, so please make sure to get everything turned in, or resubmitted if I've asked for revisions on any ...
