Assignment 20: Macro Photography
Using the macro mode on your camera, photograph a close-up of an object. I recommend taking several photos at slightly different distances, so you can find the range that your camera works best in while it's in the macro mode. Pick the best one to turn in. It's normal when you are experimenting with this mode to have the first couple shots turn out blurry, until you get comfortable with how close your camera can go.
Objectives:
Learning to look at the abstract qualities of an object. This requires looking at objects in a different way than we normally do, where we see a whole person or a whole face, rather than their hair follicles ... or a whole car rather than a close up of how the inside of the door lock looks. Show me something in a way that I normally wouldn't be able to see it.
This is one of the examples I showed in class - a macro shot of how a fork looks when viewed through droplets of steam. Once I had the steam set up, I think I took a few dozen photos to make sure I had a few I was happy with.

Grading rubric:
6 points.
2 - Taking the photo in focus - and as a macro shot.
2 - Creative interpretation of the assignment. Did you use the macro to show something in a new way?
1 - Color
1 - Composition

Re: Assignment 20: Macro Photography

Audrey's comment: Nice colors here. For others just getting started on this project, I want to point out that the focus is very typical of macro photography. The subject - the part we are supposed to look at - is in focus. Parts of the image that are closer or farther from the camera are blurred. That's normal for macro shots - they have a very narrow depth of field, meaning that if something is 6 inches from your camera, it might be in focus, but at 6 1/2 inches, it might be blurred. Don't expect your entire photo to be in focus for this assignment.
