In 1930, Grant Wood finished a very famous painting known as the American Gothic. The point of this painting was to show what kind of people he believed whould live in the house in the background of this portrait. It shows a farmer standing next to his daughter, who never married and is growing older. It shows what families looked like during the 19th century. The pitchfork that the farmer is holding, for example, shows that he was a hard worker. The painting shows how serious farmers were during the 1900s. This painting, however, it is one of the most familiar images in 20th century American art. I really like the detail put into this painting and the older feel of it.

Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino, or better known as Raphael was both an architect and and Italian Painter. He lived from 1483-1520. He was apart of the High Renaissance. This painting was one of the last ones Raphael did of the Madonna. It was painted in 152, eight years before he died. The painting is Oil paints. The entire painting called Sistine Madonna, or La Madonna di san Sisto. Pope Julius II was the one who asked for it, as an altarpiece for the church San Sisto, Piacenza. A famous part of the painting is the two cherubs at the bottom. Raphael rather was inspired by two children he encountered on the street when he saw them "looking wistfully into the window of a baker's shop." The two cherubs were very well liked by many people.

victor brauner is the painter. The painting is a Self-portrait with a Plucked Eye of the painter. It was painted in 1931. The Style of the painting is Expressionism. Brauner being regarded as one of the major pre-war and post-war Surrealist painters. He actually lost his eye in a fight and i think he wanted to see how he looks himself without an eyeball.

Claude Monet's "woman with a Parasol, (facing right.)"

The painter Claude Monet was the father of impressionism, the style of art where you paint what you would see, if you only glimpsed at it once. His artwork mainly centered on landscape painting. One of his most famous works from his early years is “Women in the garden, muse d’Orsay –Paris.” The painting of his that I researched was “Woman with a Parasol, (facing right.)” otherwise known as “Study of a figure outdoors.” It was part of Claude Monet’s impressionist movement, painted in 1886. The field of impressionism was lead at the time by Claude Monet, Picasso, and Sisley. Impressionism became quite popular in the 1870’s. The color scheme seen in Claude Monet’s painting “Women with a Parasol, (facing right.)” showed an analogous array of yellows, greens, and blues. The painting’s simplicity and lighting evoked a feeling that it was a warm spring day, while the shading in the grass and outfit gave a feeling of a gentle breeze in the air. Oil pastels was a good choice to add tecture to the painting. Painting is seen below.

The mona lisa, painted by Leonardo Da Vinci, might be the most famous oil painting in history, even though it was painted all the way back in 1503. The expression on her face really shows a lot about how people really were back then, referencing the clothes and veiw

Pietro Perugino was a painter from Italy born in 1446, He was an Italian Renaissance painter. He mostly did Oil paintings and Fresco. One of his most famous paintings was The Delivery of the Keys painted between 1481 & 1482. It is a reference to Matthew 16 from The Gospel of Matthew when the "keys of heaven" are given to St.Peter. The Setting is the Sistine Chapel in Rome. This painting has a lot of detail especially down the people. It really shows the design well and really tells the story without having to think about.

Edvard Munch is well known for is spectacular art showing expressionism. Mostly seen and common around the world is his painting called The Scream. This particular painting shows the feeling of stress, rage, anger, and confusion within just one emotion. Screaming is the physical emotion being shown. The Scream was made in 1893 through 1910. Mr. Munch created four versions of The Scream over time had past him.
Arthur Lubow described The Scream “an icon of modern art, a Mona Lisa for our time.” The four versions have been in different museums over time. One of the two original paintings of The Scream is shown at The National Gallery of Norway in Oslo; while the others are at the Munch Museum in Oslo, Norway as well. The fourth version of The Scream, in pastel, was sold for $119,922,600 at Sotheby’s impressionists and modern art auction on 2 May 2012. To a lucky buyer named Leon Black who is formally a financer.
The Scream is on display at the Museum of Modern Art in New York from October 2012 to April 2013. This painting is for high filer art thieves. In 1994, the version in the National Gallery of Norway was stolen. Luckily recovered several months later. In 2004, The Scream was stolen from the Munch Museum. Then recovered two years later.

Dancer in Her Dressing Room by Edgar Degas

This painting was painted in the year 1879 by Degas, who very often did his works in pastels, including this one. Around 1878, Degas started including dancers in his work very often. This is because in this time, Degas started to further induldge himself in to the arts. The major element of design I notice in this is the detail work in the dress of the ballerina.

Otto Dix was a German painter who was born in Gera, Germany. He was the eldest son of Franz and Louise Dix. His mother was a poet, and his father was a painter. He was exposed to art starting at a very young age. He always spent time in the studio of his cousin, Fritz Amann, who was also a painter. With some extra encouragement from his primary school teacher, he was pushed towards the world of art.

The title of the painting done by Otto is called "Small Self-Portrait," and it was painted in the year of 1913.

The style of art used in this painting shows Expressionism.

Personally, in this photograph i see a darker, more depressing look on the painting as a whole. I feel as though he painted it with intent of making it more depressing than necessary. He looks almost scary in the painting.

Assignment 12: Research on Painting due April 25

Post  matthewd on Wed Apr 24, 2013 9:11 am

This is a painting by Belgian surrealist painter Rene Magritte from 1964. The painting is called Son Of Man and it shows a man standing straight with an apple blocking the view of his face. It can show a sort of conflict between the visible that is hidden and the visible that is present.

René Magritte was a surrealist artist well known for his witty, thought-provoking images. In the year 1928 he painted "The Treachery of Images" depicting a wooden pipe with the caption "Ceci n'est pas une pipe" French for "This is not a pipe" It may seem like a contradiction, but it's actually true. The painting is simply an image of a pipe, it's not a functioning pipe. When approached about the painting, Magritte said "Could you stuff my pipe? No, it's just a representation, is it not? So if I had written on my picture 'This is a pipe,' I'd have been lying!"

Jean Raoux is and older artist born in 1677. Around this time most of the paintings are either portraits or landscapes. He did strictly portraits, they were his spatiality. Just like the painting “Young Woman Reading a Letter” which he painted around 1734. Most of his portraits were beautiful young women. They were all dressed with an abundance of elegance. The paintings truly came to life. I absoulty love the old feel of this painting. All of the ladies looked beyond flawless, he made the paleness of the skin look soft and radiant. With a dim setting for a back round it made the person in the painting pop. This is why his paintings are still around today.

The Old Guitarist is an oil painting painted by Pablo Picasso in 1903. This Painting Features a blind Old man hunched over on the street in Barcelona,Spain playing a guitar. This painting is also know for its blue monochromatic color scheme since the painting was painted during Picasso's blue period which was inspired by the suicide of one of his dearest friends. This painting was also painted during the Expressionism movement which was inspired by the combination of modernism, impressionism, post impressionism and and symbolism. However X-rays, infrared images and examinations by professionals show that there are 3 different figures hidden behind the old guitarist. The Old Guitarist is currently on display at the art institute of Chicago.

This oil painting known as The Hallucinogenic Toreador was painted by Salvador Dali in 1970. In this piece Dali is demonstrating his wife's hate for bull fighting. It is currently on display at the Salvador Dali Museum. The major elements of design that I see in this painting are combinations of different scenes, and warm, yet bright colors.

This painting was done by Rembrandt Peale in 1805 of his wife Eleanor Mayshort Peale. The painting was done in oil, and its called "Portrait of the Artist’s Wife" typically. Rembrandt was "The oldest living American artist" and he often painted portraits of people. This piece in particular though I really enjoy the details of it and its just very attractive to look at. Her arm in particular seems like its really real, it seems like this painting is a photograph. You can just tell that he loved her by this piece. The way shes looking at him, and how he painted it with a gentle tone and how much detail he put into it. She looks beautiful and I was just drawn to this piece.

The painting Tuna Fishing was pained by Salvador Dali in 1967. Dali pained this during the surrealism movement. During this movement artist made things with a sense of surprise. In Tuna Fishing it shows men catching big fish. The painting Tuna Fishing pointillism is used; witch is a lot of tiny dots of one color placed in a pattern to make a picture. There is also a action painting type of style to this painting, in some parts it looks like some colors are just splashed on and not carefully painted. In this painting there is also tachisme, witch is a French style of abstract painting. In Tuna Fishing optical art is also used. Optical art is a style of visual art that makes a illusion.

The Vitruvian Man is a drawing created by Leonardo da Vinci circa 1490. It is accompanied by notes based on the work of the architect Vitruvius. The drawing, which is in pen and ink on paper, depicts a male figure in two superimposed positions with his arms and legs apart and simultaneously inscribed in a circle and square. The drawing and text are sometimes called theCanon of Proportions or, less often, Proportions of Man. It is stored in theGallerie dell'Accademia in Venice, Italy, and, like most works on paper, is displayed only occasionally

Young Girl At Her Toilet
The painter is Jean Baptiste Camille Corot. The date of this oil on canvas painting is unknown, but it was sometime in the mid 19th century. It was a part of the French Realism Movement of the 1800's. The painting shows beauty with it's simple color scheme and subject.

I picked the painter named Laura Theresa Alma, she did her work about the 17th century women and children, she was a Romanticism artist, she mainly worked with oil on canvas. The painting I chose was "At The Doorway" and and it was made in 1898.The main principle I saw in this painting was how pretty the dress looked and the amount of detail put into it.

The artist I chose is Anthony Van Dyck. He was a Flemish artist, also considered one of the most brilliant
colorists in the history of art. He was born in 1559 and died in 1641. He was the most influential portraitist in
the 17th century. he had set a new style of Flemish painting, and he founded the English school of painting.
the painting above is called, Theodore Van Tulden, c. late 1600s - early 1700s.

Leonardo da Vinci, "The Last Supper"
A painting around 1495AD mural of Jesus and his disciples.
Part of the Renaissance.
Painting even though he did not want to.
He depicted the moment then Jesus tales his Disciples that one of them is going to betray him.
The panic of the disciples is a big part of the painting showing the fear between them.

Mr and Mrs Clark and Percy, a painting by David Hockney, was made in 1970 during the Pop art movement that started int he 1950's. In a lot of Pop art, the material of the work is randomly placed out of context, isolated, and/or combined with unrelated material. It encompasses all types of modern culture and themes. David Hockney was generally a painter who put elements and people of his own life into his paintings, and often did it from his point of view. The simple design of the room give it a very homey, yet empty feel. There is almost nothing in the room beside the two people, and even then, they give off a very stern atmosphere. Everything is a dark or pale color, and the only 'pure' thing in the painting is the cat. This, I feel, is pretty symbolic of it's artist. He described his life as "very dull and uneventful until I had a family and started painting. Light just poured in and gave it life." This is shown by the inclusion of the pure white cat.
