Assignment 11: Research on Painting due April 25

Post  Admin on Wed Apr 23, 2014 9:21 am

Select a painting created before 1970 that has at least one person in it. Embed the image into your post.

Using complete sentences in a paragraph format, identify:
1. The painter
2. The title of the painting
3. When it was painted
4. The historical art movement it was part of, and characteristics of the art movement
5. The artist's general subject matter (do they normally paint landscapes? Urban scenes? Dancers?)
6. List your sources.

If you copy/paste from wikipedia or another website, that is plagiarism and you will receive a zero.
If you need someone in class to proofread for you, that's fine.

Grading: 2 points
1 points for inclusion of each required item listed above
1 point for writing style (spelling, grammar, paragraph format).

†This painting is "Girl with a Pearl Earring" by Johannes Vermeer, done in 1665. Vermeer primarily specialized in domestic interior scenes of middle-class life and did many portraits. This painting was apart of The Baroque period, Baroque artwork combines dramatic compositions and emotionally charged, detailed subject matter to make very visually intense works.

The painter Sofonisba Anguissola was born in 1532, in Cremona, Italy. This piece is descriptively titled Self Portrait at the Easel, and it was painted in 1556. It falls into the category of Renaissance art. More specifically, her art was influenced largely by artists like Campi and Gatti, notable for careful attention to color and an overall softness apparent in her work. Despite her remarkable skill, she was still hindered by her status and resultant limitations as a female artist. In particular, it was seen as inappropriate for her to view nudes, which meant she was unable to study anatomy, and was therefore limited to portraiture. It is estimated that in her life she painted around fifty pieces.

The painting above is the Portrait of Herman Kalahele by Mabel Alvarez, which was done in 1939. The movement that influenced her heavily was the Synchromist Movement. This movement was founded in 1912 by American artists Stanton MacDonald-Wright and Morgan Russell. Synchromism is based on the idea that color and sound are similar in many ways including that the colors in a painting can be arranged in the same sort of way as a composer leading an orchestra. Mabel always worked with still lifes and self portraits in her artistic career.

Painted in 1640s by Giovanni Battista Salvi da Sassoferrato, or simply Sassoferrato, this painting has various names, most common, "Madonna in Prayer" or "Virgin Mary." Sassoferrato was born and worked in the midst of the Baroque period, which exaggerated movement to produce drama and tension. Baroque paintings are largely influenced by the Roman Catholic Church in Rome, Italy, where it originated as well. Sassoferrato focuses on bible stories and characters, mainly the Virgin Mary, and paints portraits with emphasis on the cloth surrounding the main character.

The painting is "The Creation of Adam" by Michelangelo. Painted around 1511, the painting is based on the biblical story "Genesis" where God created †Adam, the first man. God here is depicted as an elderly man with a long white beard, and he is gives an outstretched hand to Adam to give him the spark of life. The people behind God are his angels.

The title of this painting is 'The Baptism of Christ' by Aert de Gelder (1645-1727)
The historical ar movement this painting would be classified of would be the Early century Christian Art. Alot of Christian art hundreds of years ago have 'UFO' or spacecrafts in them. Alot of paintings showing Jesus and Spacecrafts both in them were very known during the French Revolution. What is the general subject matter of this painting? I believe that's up to the observer to perceive and base their own opinion on.

The image shown above is known as Marius at Minturnae, an oil on canvas piece. It was painted by the French artist, Jean Germain Drouais, in 1786. Drouais belonged to the art movement known as Neoclassicism. The characteristics of said art movement emphasized the use of harmony, simplicity, and proportion in artwork. With this, there was also a new-found interest in ancient civilizations as architecture of this movement was heavily influenced by the style of ancient Greek structures. The primary subject matters of his paintings are people, his work having been influenced by the style of both Raphael as well as his master, Jacques-Louis David.

Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I was painted by Gustav Klimt. It was painted in 1907 as part of the symbolism movement. Symbolism was a rejection of the materialistic view on the world used in literature and art, it was elegant and simple and used aspects of surrealism. Gustav's main focus was the woman's body and used plenty of gold in his artwork.

This painting is known mostly as "The Scream" or Der Schrei der Natur (The Scream of Nature) by Edvard Munch. Painted in 1893 it mainly shows a person with an agonized expression. Surrounded by a really tumultuous orange sky. Munch has created around four versions of this painting which all look really great and show a bunch of emotion. He also focuses on oil/pastel work.

The painting above is a self-portrait, titled and by Andy Warhol, in 1967. It's usually shown and printed in multiple photos, varying in colors. †Similar to the style of his infamous paintings of the "Campbell's Soup" can or his portrait of Marilyn Monroe, Warhol was known for his "pop-art" pieces and was a very successful commercial illustrator. The painting, Les Demoiselles d'Avignon, made by Pablo Picaso, was part of the Cubism art movement. This art piece outraged many viewers who were disgusted by the "ugliness" of the faces of the people in it. It was revealed in 1907. Cubism is a painting made from a real scene or scenario, with trees or people of things of that sort and it's made to be more abstract looking. Picaso painted a wide variety of different types of paintings, he mainly stuck to more abstract work, like the cubism era.
