Post  JillianB on Thu Mar 26, 2009 1:00 pm

Name: Nick S.
Age: 17
Favorite things to do in free time: skateboarding, bowling, guitar, hanging out wtih friends, playing rockband.
Nick resides in Warren MI.
He used to live in Birmingham but moved to Warren when he was in the 6th grade.
He currently has a girlfriend named Monica. She's 17. They are both juniors in high school.
Nick goes to Groves highschool in Birmingham, and Monica goes to Henry ford 2.
His favorite music is Rock music and his favorite band is The Devil Wears Prada.
He has many nicknames "Big E" , "Elephante'", and more.
He is not sure of what he wants to major in in college but he does want to go to college.
He has 2 Lizards, (Iggy and Bear) one is his and one is his step sisters.
Most of his family lives on his street, along with his friends.
He doesn't really like TV but he Loves movies.
His favorite food is Thai and Mexican.
He doesn't believe in religion, but he's not 100% Athiest. He believes that people should be more open minded when it comes to religion. He says "no one knows exactly what happens when we die, so no one should judge another person regarding their religion ever."
When it comes to drug use, Nick really didn't want to get into it because he could "rant about it forever" about how he does not believe the government has the right to tell people what they can and cannot do on their own time in the privacy of their own home. "The government is supposed to represent the people, not rule the people like a dictator".

Some things that went well with my interview with Nick.
-It wasn't an awkward interview.
-I got him to open up fairly fast.
-He had a lot of great opinions on controversial topics that challenged the mainstream opinion.
-He was very cooperative.

Some things that didn't go so well with my interview.
-At first i had a hard time thinking of questions.

Nothing really went bad with this interview.

Felicia Jones (fake name)

-Junior in College
-2 children (2 boys ages 3 and 1)
-married
-studying to become an nurses assistant
-interning at a hospital
-loves interning at the hospital
-works at a coffee shop
-wants 2 move to New York
-wants 1 more child
-ethnicity is black, white, hawaiian, and indian
-hobbies include boxing, talking on the tv, and spending all her extra time with her children
-She mentioned that because she is a busy person that its hard for her to get around with the way gas prices are. And she fears that next year when her son starts pre-schooling that she wonít be able to get back and forth to everywhere she needs to be. With her husband not working, and sheís only receiving minimum wage. She believes she will have to cut some of hobbies off.

What works well with interviews is if you can find a subject that they are really into the interview is less stressful and the time will seem as though it flew by. What doesnít work with interviews is when the interviewer is nervous then the interviewee will take notice and it might throw them off. Also I learned that when questions donít immediately pop into your head looking at your surroundings might trigger a memory and you can base a question off that.

Re: Assignment 10: Interview #3

Mike is a senior at Warren Woods Tower. Our interview skipped a lot of the small talk and went straight into political issues when I mentioned that, although promises were made by the Obama administration to refrain from raiding medical cannabis dispensaries unless it disobeys both state and federal laws, last Thursday a federal raid was made in San Fransisco where under state laws the dispensary was legal. Mike stated that he had noticed an ongoing trend in the lack of consistency in Obama's stance on legalization of marijuana related issues. Mike feels that, although Obama is often heard supporting either medicinal legalization or at least reforms in the policy, there has been many actions contradicting his statements, such as his "virtual town hall meeting" when he made jokes and disregarded valid points. Although the interview between Mike and I consisted almost entirely of facts, and not alot of Mike sharing his opinion. Judging by the facts he chose to share with me, it is implied that he advocates legalizing marijuana and is disappointed in Obama's inconsistency and hypocrisy on many issues so far.

Some things that make an interview go smoothly is to phrase it more like a conversation, without set questions. Have, perhaps, an idea of where you want to gear the interview, but donít force it by randomly reading off a pre-rehearsed question. This is especially important in the beginning when the person is warming up to you/ being interviewed. Another good way to make sure you donít do too much of the talking is to bring up a topic you know (or have an idea) the person is either interested in or has a strong opinion on. If your interview turns into a bit of a debate, itís good to play devilís advocate, even if you agree with the personís point of view. This way it will prevent something like ďI think this because of this and thatís the end of itĒ.

john*
almost 17, junior in high school, doesn't drive yet;
favorite classes are math and government;
is a republican and he liked obama at first, but now "regrets" wanting him to be in office;
claims he's one of the reasons why the economy isn't doing good right now, especially the auto industry.
most of his family work in the auto industry, not all in michigan though.
wants to go to Southern California University to study philosophy and politics.
wouldn't want to consider moving out of the country--would rather travel to tropical places for vacations.
wants to be in the U.S. government somehow, as a mayor or senator, something along those lines
hates airplanes and is not looking forward to college; he wants the "schooling process" to be over.
he will kind of miss high school--doesn't play any sports, though he used to play basketball in middle school.
hates winter sports because he doesn't like the snow or cold-favorite season is summer.
usually goes to his cottage by Lake Michigan during the summer for a couple of weeks.

Things that I've learned about interviewing to make it more smoothly is to think of the questions before hand, of course. Don't ask everyone the same questions--ask them things that pertain to the individual person. When they answer a question, branch off of that topic and don't change the subject completely--treat it like a conversation. Also, avoid long pauses between each other; it makes it more awkward and the person being interviewed more nervous.

Aaron Felczak
5th hour

Interviewing: John Fuller
(Name Changed)

-Age: 17
-Birthday: March 25th
-High School: Warren Mott
-Favorite Sport: Basketball
-2nd Favorite sport: Baseball
-Listens to any kind of music
-Does not know at this time what he wants to do with his life
-Likes to work with cars and paint them
-Enjoys playing with computers and getting new stuff for them

I also asked him about the recession and how itís been impacting his family and friends. I asked him if he could explain what some of the problems were at this time of crisis and he explained to me that money for him and his family are the big deal right now because there businesses are taking pay cuts because they canít afford all the people working their, so his family is suffering right now at this time of need and is trying to keep all his spending and a low cost.

What works for me when asking questions is to start out with the easier questions then move into the more complex ones that may require some thought but not always. But the questions that worked for the best I think that it was with all the questions that were on the board up in front, I had some good answers for those ones.

Mary

Mary is a 62 year old female. She lives in Saint Clair, Michigan with her husband, grand-daughter and great-grand daughter. She is a mother of four, a grandmother of 13 and a great grandmother of one. Family is very important to her. Obama was her choice for president and she has a hope for change. The economy is a very big issue for her. Her husband is in the process of retiring and she is very worried about how they are going to pay for things. She has raised two of her grandchildern and is currently helping raise her great grand daughter. She was a registered nurse before she got cancer. When she had cancer she was told to use weed if she could get ahold of some, which makes her strongly for medical marijuana.

I think being confident strongly helps an interview. Being nervous and pausing makes things awkward during an interview and ruins the flow of thought.

Carl (change name)

His hobbies are because to do tech work. He has two jobs, he work at a church and a recording studio. He wants a career in lighting design. He wants to go to Fullsail College in Florida. He wants to go to Florida because he thinks it a very nice place to live. He think the economy is bad because are going up on almost everything and there are not as many jobs as it should be. He compared this recession to the great depression but he really couldnít tell me why. He thinks Obama is a good president and can improve this recession especially by making more jobs for people. Also saying that this will help the percentage rate go down in poverty because the nation will be able to give more money.
