Assignment 4: Ideas for Quantifying our Lives Due 2/16

Post  Admin on Mon Feb 15, 2016 9:30 pm

Background: If you haven't yet, watch the TED talk with Chris Jordan.

Pick one aspect of life that you think can be represented by numbers. The topic or subject is your choice, it can be personal and about you or your habits, or it can be statistics from a local, national or international level.

Post up your IDEA for it here, along with the research you found about the numbers. I'm not looking for finished artwork today, just the idea and statistics or data about it.

I want to do a piece on sexual assault on women. I found that 1 in 5 women will be sexually assaulted in her lifetime and 1 in 10 were assaulted by a partner.

Statistics

Post  alannadavis on Tue Feb 16, 2016 10:07 am

Rape in the U.S.A.

Data found and why I chose this topic:

On average there are 293,066 sexual assault and rape victims. Those numbers don't seem high but that is because it's only reported incidents from victims ages 12+. About 30,000+ of those victims are in fact male. Rape is a big issue across the globe and these are only numbers from our country and that is why I chose this topic.

yo take these numbers

Post  josephc on Tue Feb 16, 2016 1:11 pm

I have decided to do look into the amount of people that suffer from agoraphobia. According to miraresearch.org, about 3.2 million Americans between the ages of 18 and 54 suffer from agoraphobia every year on average. Agoraphobia is often related to or called panic disorder. I found these numbers through Google search. They are on a national level cause I roll big u feel me

I am probably going to do one of these statistics.
~Over the course of our lifetime, we will spend a total of 3,680 hours or 153 days searching for misplaced items. Research found, we lose up to nine items every day, or 198,743 in a lifetime. Phones, keys, sunglasses, and paperwork top the list.
~ There are 300,000 items in the average American home.

My idea will be about the numbers of students dropping out of school.
As it has said in an article over 1.2 million students drop out. 26 seconds a day equals 7,000 students.

My idea will be animals put down in shelters each year.

It is estimated that approximately 3.7 million animals were euthanized in the nation’s shelters in 2008. In contrast 56 percent of dogs and 71 percent of cats that enter animal shelters are put down each year. roughly 64 percent of the total number of animals that entered shelters were put down in 1997, the last count for that.

i decided to do a piece on kids with any type of disorder (most likely bipolar kids). Up to every 1 of 5 children suffer from such things. Not that them being born with a disorder is their fault but it costs over $247 billion every year for treatment and all the things needed for them.

I want to do a piece on the number of underage drinkers a year. In 2008 22.7 percent of 8.7 million people through the age of 15-21 said they had drunk in the last month.

My Topic is about the numbers of Stray Animals

Around 7.6 million animals are found on the streets and taken into shelters.
Approximately 3.9 million are dogs and 2.4 million are cats.

So I'm going to be researching how many car crashes happen per year. Normally it's around 3,000 deaths per day, and 20-50 million are possibly injured or disabled during car accidents. At least 1.3 million people die each year from these tragidies, it's really horrible...

My idea would be about animal cruelty and abuse against animals

Nearly 1 million animals a year are abused or killed from domestic violence, most of which are dogs, and approximately 3 to 4 million cats and dogs are euthanized each year.

I've decided to do a piece on major depression among teenagers. An estimated 2.8 million kids between the ages of 12-17 had at least one major depressive episode every year. This represents 11.8% of kids in the U.S. of that age.
If I feel like that's giving me trouble in the future, I will do adults with any sort of personality disorder. 9.1% of the adult population in the U.S. has some sort of personality disorder. Only 39% of those people are receiving treatment.

My idea is about the statistics for Rape against men and women.

In 2010, there were 188,380 reports of rape and/or sexual assault within the US. Most victims are Females, but not to exclude males with the approximate ratio of being 182,000 Female Victims and 40,000 Male Victims. Most cases have been with women under the age of 21, and the acts committed are usually by an intimate partner or a close friend/relative.

I've decided to go with Deforestation and how many trees are being chopped down each year. According to my research and recent statistics, 15.3 billion trees are being chopped down every year - 139 acres per minute - from humans making and using wood-based items/materials.

the u.s has over 2,220,300 incarcerated in 2013. russia only has 874,161 incarcerated as of now. thats a big gap and we say russia is a bad place

I wanted to do people on social media, tv, or playing the game. I research that its 9 hours of playing the game or on social media. I found out that boys on social media 40 minutes less then girls but boys on the game 8 hours but on social media for 1 hour.

I am doing mine on mental health issues in teens and kids. 74.5 million children in the United States, an estimated 17.1 million have or have had a psychiatric disorder, more than the number of children with cancer, diabetes, and AIDS combined. 40% of youth with diagnosable ADHD, 60% of youth with depression, and 80% of youth with a diagnosable anxiety disorder go without treatment. 22.2% of American youth will have a diagnosable mental illness with “serious impairment” at some point before they are 18.
