Assignment 11: portfolio book project Part One (Revised)
This assignment has been revised. I broke it into two parts so getting started won't seem so overwhelming.
Your assignment is create the first of 5 two-page spreads for your portfolio book. You can use a photography theme (using only your own photos), or a graphics theme with design elements you create in PhotoShop (not third party clipart!), or a mix of the two.
If you are also in Digital Imaging II, you will only need to submit one basic design concept between the two classes, but you will do a total of 6 two-page spreads (one two page spread for Dig Img II credit, and the additional 5 spreads for multimedia credit). Post a response in both threads so you get credit in both classes.
Select a site that does publishing on demand (where you can upload a book and order a single copy of it if you wish). Some potential sites: lulu or mypublisher. You will need to register with them, and navigate through their website to select a book size and upload your pages.
In this thread, you will submit:
Part 1: A link to the publishing site you selected, the size book you selected, and a price for what a book would cost if you ordered one through them. (You may have to decide on page length.)
Part 2: a jpg of the first two page spread.
Part 3 will not be submitted to the thread - you will have to call me over to show that your page is uploaded to the site.
------------
Objectives:
* Learning how to prepare a professional looking portfolio book that you can bring to job interviews or enclose with college applications.
* Developing and applying layout skills to make two pages with different content have a consistent style.
------------
Grading Rubric:
Part 1: 1 point - researching price quotes for the book.
Part 2: up to 2 points for quality of graphics and a consistent layout style. Think about orphans, widows, white space, readable fonts, image resolution (which you will run into when you try to upload images), and the overall look.
Part 3: After posting in the thread, call me over so I can see your pages are uploaded to the publishing site. There is no grade for this portion, but it is a required element of the assignment, so you will not receive ANY credit until this portion is complete.

First two pages.
I chose lulu.com.
The size is "comic book" (6.625" x 10.25"), and a 32-page book would cost $10.90.

I chose Lulu.com and a hardcover 8.5" x 11" size book. It would cost $25.95 to order.

I used Lulu.com
I chose a book that's 8 1/2 by 11 inches, and costs about $20.
My first page spread looks like this:

Photo Book Projects
I chose lulu.com to do my photobook. I used an 8.5 x 8.5 page, which was $20 if I went with a hardcover and $10 if I chose paperback. I was trying to go for a sort of color scheme on these two.

I was using a neon green instead of that dark brown but Elle suggested it would look better in more earthy tones. I now agree.

This one is a little scribbly but I like it that way because of the hilly-loopy look of the zipper. (Yes, I made up most of the words in that sentance.)

some explanation first; so i was working on a design (the letters) that a tutorial taught me (it wasn't their concept just their controls) when i got to the executing of it the tutorial wouldn't load and i couldn't get the controls to do what i wanted, so i just posted the halfway finished design and then whenever the website decides to work I'll do what i originally wanted.
