This is a self portrait by Vincent Van Gogh. He painted many self portraits and many with felt hats. This one is called Self-Portrait with a Grey Felt Hat. He finished this one in 1887. He was a Dutch post-impressionist. He was greatly influenced by the French Impressionists. The post-impressionist artwork was similar the impressionism. The artwork has vivid colors, thick paint, and the brush strokes are obvious. Van Gogh painted everything. He painted still-life, people, landscapes, and many other things. This painting has a lot of texture and the strokes seem to go inward toward the face. The colors are intense. His eyes are directed at the viewer. One of the reasons I chose this picture is because of the hat he is wearing.

This painting is called "Not to be Reproduced" and it's by René Magritte; it was painted in 1937. It was part of the surrealist art movement. The Surrealist art movement was about expressing imagination or life in a method that was free from control, convention, and reason. Margritte often painted people with hidden faces, strangely proportioned obects, and and blue skies. The elements of this piece include space, the way they balance space is this painting is very important. The space creates emphasis on the person and his reflection. The painting is very still and eerie.

" Head of Christ," Which was painted between the years of 1648-1650. It was painted by Dutch painter and etcher Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn. This painting wasnt part of an art movement of any kind I dont believe it was just something Remembrandt enjoyed doing. He was very successful and appraised for his art work as a painter and a etcher. He is considered to be one of the greatest painters and printmakers in European art history as well as Dutch history. His art work varied from portraits of his contemporaries, self-portraits, and illustrations of scenes from the Bible. The elements of design that I saw was the beautiful colors used to illustrate and portray Christ as a contemporary individual. I also liked the texture of the painting it was an oil canvas painting, which makes the painting so much more appreciated.

The title of this piece is 'The Lovers' and it was painted by Rene Magriette in 1928. It was influenced by the surrealist movement which was characterized by peculiar/dream-like imagery. Magriette's subject matter generally consists of bizarre, faceless portraits and oddly proportioned objects. The major design element in this piece is space as the locations of certain highlights and shadows in the painting give it the illusion of a third dimension.

Son of Man, painted in 1964 was created by the belgin painter Rene Magritte a very famous surrealist painter who's works are very recognizable in pop culture but what makes this piece and in many of his pieces if certain things were tweaked, (like the apple gone from in front of the man's face) it would be a normal portrait of somekind of buisness man that's what makes his art so unique than other surrealists in his time.

The painter was William Bouguereau and the title of the painting i chose by him is Êtude Tete de Jeune Fille. It was paint in 1898 and was part of the Realism movement. The Realism movement captures characteristics of reality and sensational, dramatic elements. William Bouguereau was a portrait painter that also captured elements of biblical characters into his works. I feel that shape and balance play an important role in this particular piece because the shape of the women is very smooth and soft. It is also very balance as far as colors and proportions of her face.

I chose 'Unknown Woman' by Anthony Van Dyck. This portrait was painted in the time range of 1599-1641. The painting was not part of any historical art movement. The general subject matter of this painting is the Unknown Woman's face. The major element of design is value. The light to dark transition shows focus in this painting. The principle of design for this painting would be harmony because the colors used in the skin are close together on the color wheel and the rest of the painting uses colors opposite of those.

This is "The Snack Bar" painted by Edward Burra in 1930. Edward Burra was a surrealist and considered part of the Harlem Renaissance of the 20's and 30's. The Harlem Renaissance was a movement for the advancement of African-American literature, art, and music. Burra wasn't African-American, but he is still seen as part of the movement because he painted many pieces about Harlem, the foundation of the movement. He lived in England but traveled to the United States often. Burra was mainly interested in urban life and was infatuated by the people of Harlem. A major element of design included in this piece is form. The values give everything a certain depth that makes it more 3-D than 2-D. A major principle of design is proportion. Burra had to take into account some type of proportion into the faces of the woman and the man. There is also some perspective in the picture. In the foreground, the woman and the man are larger and as you move to the background the people become smaller.

'Flaming June' was painted by Sir Frederic Leighton in 1895. He worked in the classicist style, and usually depicted classical Greek and biblical heroes. The use of color in this piece is exhibited in the girl's bright orange dress. An example of movement would be the natural, relaxed pose the girl is lying in.

This is a self portrait done by James Northcote, which was completed in 1768. In it, he depicts himself holding a palette and brushes in one hand, and his other raised to his head as if he is thinking. The Dark maroon of his jacket complements his pale complexion, and is an example of color, and his hand that is raised upwards expresses movement.

This piece “The Desperate Man (self-portrait)” was painted by Gustave Courbet around 1843-1845. Gustave painted this piece during the Romanticism art movement. This art movement was a very artistic, literary, and intellectual movement and legalized the right of pertraying strong emotion, horror, and terror as an accurate beautiful experience.Courbets subject matter consists of him making the pictures loook as real as they can be, and making the people and objects in the picture look exactly like they exist. The main element and principle of design in the painting are for one “Balance” because everything fits in the right places and the picture can stand on its own and everything is in the right places so the whole picture itself is the main focus, and the element of design is “Color” because its so realistic the colors in the picture have to be persise and they’re just right.

This painting of "Venus" was painted by
Michael Parkes. He painted Venus before
2007 because it was displayed in
Denmark and Holland.
Venus is the goddess of love and sensuality. The mask that Venus
is holding is the mask of sorrow, confusion, and misery.
The waves coming up from her feet, fine detailing.
Michael Parkes is a "Magical realist",
Parkes studied graphic art and painting at the University of Kansas.
The flow of the painting is just like a flow of waves spouting up.
and the hue of the colors such as the blues, and soft blues, green blues. her long red hair.

'Judith and her Maidservant' was painted by Artemisia Gentileschi in 1613 to 1614. It was painted in the Baroque art movement, which consisted of exaggerated movement and easy interpretation of the paintings, and is a painting about a tale from the Bible that told of Judith and her Maidservant who cut off the head of Holofernes, the General of the enemy army. The element of this painting is the movement, the way the two women are posed shows they are trying to move discreetly. The principle of the painting is the contrast of the bright clothing they each wear and the shadows around them.

The artist of this piece is the Austrian Egon Schiele. The name is of the multimedia drawing/ painting is 'Seated Woman with Bent Knee' and was created in 1917. The art movement that this work is influenced by and is part of is expressionism, typical characteristics of this movement include evocation of strong emotion, the artists subjective view of the world, vivid and vibrant use of colour depending on the emotion the artist is trying to express/ convey. Schiele's work is characterized by dynamic and distorted representations of the human figure, and intense representations. Line is a very important element in the painting, I have always appreciated this artist for his use of line, in this piece the lines and drawing as a whole is rough and raw.

The Crucifixion, seen from the Cross is composed of 350 water colors. It was created by the French writer James Tissot, after he took recent travels to the Middle East. It was completed in 1894, and is very unique. It is meant to capture the crucifixion of Jesus Christ through his own eyes, from his perspective. The scene represents a point in which Jesus is seeing his people from above, not in heaven, but nailed down to the cross. The artwork is very straightforward, and it moves you in such a way to try and see things in that time from that specific point of view, as it puts emphasis on the sad picture. The artwork was written when Tissot started indulging in Christianity. It has somewhat of a texture element by the use of water colors, and it puts on that dramatic feel.

"Three musicians' was one of Picasso's most famous paintings. This painting is a strong example of the Synthetic Cubist style. Synthetic Cubism was the style which shapes are simplified to a more geometric and flat form.,its took place in the 1920's which is why this painting was painted in 1921. Pablo Picasso's main subject were irregular angles and odd shapes he put into hs paintings. Earlier in his career he made more relalistic paintings but his famous work were more obscure. There al lots of shapes and form in this painting. He forms all of the shapes together to make it seem like one whole huge scrambled shape, but if you look closely you can see the three musicians playing there instruments.

The painting that I've chosen to do is The Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci. This painting never fails to intrigue the viewer. Painted in 1505, this work of art has gone down to be one of the most famous paintings of all time. It was painted during the Renaissance, the style of this masterpiece is classic realism. It's also one of the first paintings to show atmospheric perspective. Leonardo da Vinci was intrigued by the human body, and it's shape, and chose that to be his subject matter. There's a lot of texture in the entire painting. On her hands, it looks like a real hand that you could almost touch. A lot of value in it as well, you can see a lot of shading in the cheekbones and under the neck.

The piece “Vantage” by Mel Ramos was created in 1972. Ramos was a part of the Pop Art movement, a style of art that challenged the ideas and concepts of fine art. Pop art uses aspects of mass culture and plays on them, aspects like advertisements, brands, anything that was or seemed a big deal and it would generally try to be parody like. The subject matter in this photo could be either the woman or the cigarettes, if Ramos was trying to make a parody than the cigarettes would be the subject matter. However, some believe that Ramos was not trying to be satirical but show a respectful aspect in which case the woman would be the main subject. The main element of design in the piece is form because you have two objects that have very different shape and both are three dimensional, the cigarette box is, well, a box so it has hard lines and sharp corners where as the woman has curves and flows but form was used in such a way to make them both look very three dimensional and fit together very well. The main principal of design which is sort of along the same lines is proportion, or lack there of, in a sense. A cigarette box and a human are not the same size but in this piece they are, so the proportion is off in that sense, in another, when illustrating people you have to have a great understanding of the human proportion, as Ramos clearly does.

This is the Mona Lisa perhaps the most famous painting in all the world. Not much is known about this work of art, people even debate on the year it was painted. How ever it is generally agreed that it was painted in year 1505. It was painted by Leonardo Da Vinci. The piece itself is a masterpiece, the texture on the skin, the dark almost black red hair and the dark shades on her neck.
